Like many in our community, I was heartbroken—and angry—when I heard about the murder of a well-known Platte County sports reporter in a shooting that killed 50-year-old Dennis Sharkey Jr. on Jan. 10, 2025, But what happened next should concern all of us even more: the immediate rush to downplay the facts and shift the focus away from personal accountability.
We now know a suspect is in custody, facing multiple felony charges. What we don’t know yet is what the media won’t say out loud. Based on the suspect’s name, many believe he may be a foreign national. Some are even wondering: is he here legally? And that’s a fair question. ” But I’ll say this: if people fear no consequences, we shouldn’t be surprised when they stop acting like there are any. Harsh justice deters crime. That’s not cruelty, that’s common sense.
Thank God for Sheriff Erik Holland and Prosecutor Eric Zahnd for stepping up and treating this with the seriousness it deserves. A man is dead. A community is shaken. We don’t need more lectures. We need leaders with backbone, laws with teeth, and a culture that puts victims above virtue signaling.
