Will State Funding Finally Bring the Royals to NKC?

With the funding approved and legislation passed for  a Clay County sports Authority, our local commissioners are all set to begin another push for bringing the Royals to NKC. However they seem to be proceeding more cautiously than last time and enthusiasm is muted.  Clay County Commissioner Withington noted that negotiations are miles away at this point.  Commissioners Wagner and Nolte are likewise proceeding cautiously in their public statements. We got burned when John Sherman used the proposed NKC site as a bargaining tool to get a better deal out of Jackson county. Which promptly blew up in his face. But Clay County still remains remains the last viable site in Missouri after Jackson county rejected funding for the Royals.

The county now has the legal structure to negotiate and even build a stadium, but enthusiasm is clearly muted. Some residents and officials remain skeptical, pointing to the potential for increased traffic congestion in the Northland and the lingering concerns over the impact of how a stadium would change the existing neighborhoods of North Kansas City

If the state wants to pay for it, great, Maybe we can avoid hiking Clay County’s sales and property taxes. But honestly? Let Kansas have them.

For now, the ball is back in John Sherman’s court—if he’s still in the game.
