Clay County, MO — Residents may see relief on their property tax bills if Clay County Commissioner Jason Withington has his way. At a recent meeting, Withington proposed a 10.5% decrease in the General Revenue levy for 2026, continuing what he describes as a consistent effort to reduce the local tax burden.
Withington highlighted the county’s recent progress: the 2024 levy was $0.0250, the 2025 levy currently sits at $0.0200, and the 2026 proposal drops it further to $0.0179 per $100 of assessed value. According to Withington, these cuts amount to a 28.4% reduction over two years.
“Government should live within its means, and we should return money to the people who earned it,” Withington said. “The fight for lower taxes continues.”
The proposal reflects Withington’s focus on fiscal responsibility, a recurring theme in his tenure as commissioner. While supporters say it demonstrates effective stewardship of taxpayer dollars, some experts caution that long-term reductions could impact county services if revenue shortfalls are not managed carefully.
The proposed levy reduction will be reviewed during upcoming commission meetings, where county officials and residents will have opportunities to provide input before a final vote.
