New Retail, Dining and Family Attractions Coming to Zona Rosa This Year

Zona Rosa is once again announcing a fresh wave of tenants, continuing its long-running tradition of trying to fill storefronts that—depending on who you ask—have either been “coming soon” or “available for lease” since roughly the Bush administration. There is no doubt, some desperation on their part after losing subsidies from the Platte County government earlier this year.

The outdoor shopping district at the northwest corner of Northwest Barry Road and Interstate 29 opened with great fanfare in 2006, promising a walkable retail destination for the Northland. Nearly two decades later, some spaces appear to have quietly committed themselves to a long-term career in vacancy. Still, optimism persists, and we have some update by way of Joyce KC over at Flatland. .

Among the largest additions is Burlington, which will open this summer at 8450 N.W. Prairie View Road in the former Staples location.

A new Culver’s restaurant is also planned at 7160 N.W. Barry Road, featuring a double drive-thru, patio seating and a large dining room. Franchisee Jerome Schumacher expects the restaurant to open June 29.

Several locally owned businesses are also joining the development. Herbs N’ Harlem, opening in April at 7311 N.W. 86th Terrace, will sell handmade candles, home fragrances and curated gift sets. Nearby, Hula Hoop KC, a vintage boutique offering affordable women’s clothing, is also expected to open in April at 7106 N.W. 86th Terrace.

For families, Kids Empire plans to open an 11,500-square-foot indoor playground this spring at 7430 N.W. 87th St., offering active play areas and party space.
